Anything Can Happen and Probably Will

Mark Twain (penname of Samuel Langhorne Clemen...

Mark Twain Playing In Tesla's Lab

“There is apparently nothing that cannot happen.”

This quote has been attributed to Mark Twain, who did not even live to see many of the miracles of the modern age as well as the depths that humanity would sink to in the past century.  I  tend to agree with him that anything the human mind can imagine has at least an outside shot of actually coming to pass. So plug in your brain and start dreaming, but please don’t dream up any more nightmares, we have had enough of those lately.

Summer Noses Spouting Milk: Poetry Leads to Sit Down Comedy

I don’t mind dying. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.

Woody Allen

I just came across this quote and it made me laugh loudly. I could hear the slight stutter and see the raised eyebrows over the thick black glasses.

On a completely different but vaguely connected note here is something else that made me laugh when I came across it in my papers from my work this summer.

Summer Noses

It was a summer made out of noses

It rained candy and sunshined jello

and rainbowed suckers.

We could climb a ladder and eat a rainbow.

How about if the grass was made out of eyelashes.

What if it was Fall hair?

What if our houses where big, big, big eyeballs?

What if the beaches where big giant marshmallows?

I took dictation during a brainstorming session during snack one day in June. I read it back and let the kids come up with more ideas and take ones out they didn’t like. They approved the final wording. Out of this was born our Giant Game in which I would ask them where they wanted to play after snack, and each child would say ” I want to go to the giant, giant . . . giant climbing trees” or ” field” or “goat pen” or wherever they wanted to go. There would of course be 5 to 10 “giant”s where the dots are. They all seemed to enjoy the game immensely and I got the information to plan their day. When working with children I find that understanding a game is not always crucial to the outcome, but allowing the children to take control in ways that they enjoy makes children so much more cooperative about the things that I have to insist on like safety issues. Even though I found the game repetitive and tiresome, I could see the joy of mastering timing and surprise. Maybe Woody Allen or Groucho Marx started this way. Anyway, they got a lotta laughs, and when someone really nailed their line, they were rewarded with a nasal milk fountain. When the milk comes out of the nose, that’s when you know you’re working the room.

Two Pieces in a Blue Sky Puzzle

I was sitting in a meeting. Someone was saying some things I heard earlier in the week. So my mind started to wander through some ideas about existential philosophy that I had put away a while ago. I pulled them out and blew the dust of, and there were two ideas that seem to go together like jigsaw puzzle pieces of pure blue sky.

1) All actions are equal when viewed objectively.

2) Any action I take cruel or kind can have little effect on the universe, but will have a tremendous effect on me.

I put them together and put them away carefully to await the other pieces that will complete my blue sky some day. Maybe there will be a sun. I don’t know yet.

A Bit of Summer Rain/ 4 Rainy Poems

It has been raining a bit around here, the gentle, cool, rain of late summer, a lot like spring. The season is shifting. The light is retreating in little backward steps to the tip-toe encroachment of shadows, the same dance, back and forth. I am back at my old job and in peoples homes visiting families. The rain tells me that soon I will be in a classroom trying to make sense of new voices. So here are some rain poems. Some of them are spring poems but it is the rain I am talking about today.

“April Rain Song”

Let the rain kiss you
Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops
Let the rain sing you a lullaby
The rain makes still pools on the sidewalk
The rain makes running pools in the gutter
The rain plays a little sleep song on our roof at night
And I love the rain.
Langston Hughes, The Dream Keeper

The Spring Storm

The sky has given over
its bitterness.
Out of the dark change
all day long
rain falls and falls
as if it would never end.
Still the snow keeps
its hold on the ground.
But water, water
from a thousand runnels!
It collects swiftly,
dappled with black
cuts a way for itself
through green ice in the gutters.
Drop after drop it falls
from the withered grass-stems
of the overhanging embankment.

William Carlos Williams

Rain

I opened my eyes
And looked up at the rain,
And it dripped in my head
And flowed into my brain,
And all that I hear as I lie in my bed
Is the slishity-slosh of the rain in my head.

I step very softly,
I walk very slow,
I can’t do a handstand–
I might overflow,
So pardon the wild crazy thing I just said–
I’m just not the same since there’s rain in my head.

Shel Silverstein

Last Night the Rain Spoke to Me

Last night
the rain
spoke to me
slowly, saying,
what joy
to come falling
out of the brisk cloud,
to be happy again
in a new way
on the earth!
That’s what it said
as it dropped,
smelling of iron,
and vanished
like a dream of the ocean
into the branches
and the grass below.
Then it was over.
The sky cleared.
I was standing
under a tree.
The tree was a tree
with happy leaves,
and I was myself,
and there were stars in the sky
that were also themselves
at the moment
at which moment
my right hand
was holding my left hand
which was holding the tree
which was filled with stars
and the soft rain –
imagine! imagine!
the long and wondrous journeys
still to be ours.

Whose Driving This Thing?

”]Cover of "Cool Hand Luke [Blu-ray]"

Plastic Jesus

I don’t care if it rains or freezes
as long as I’ve got my plastic Jesus
sitting on the dashboard of my car
it comes in colors pink and pleasant
it glows in the dark cause its iridescent
I’ll take it with me whenever I go far

Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus
Sittin’ on the dashboard of my car
Through all trials and tribulations
We will travel every nation
Me and my plastic Jesus we’ll go far

I don’t care if it’s dark or scary
Long as I have magnetic Mary
Ridin’ on the dashboard of my car
I feel I’m protected amply
I’ve got the whole damn holy family

Riding on the dashboard of my car
Oh Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus,
Riding on the dashboard of my car.
I’m afraid he’ll have to go,
His magnets ruin my radio,
And if I have a wreck, he’ll leave a scar.

You can buy a sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones sitting on a
Pedestal of abalone shell
Goin’ ninety, I’m not wary
‘Cause I’ve got my virgin Mary
Guaranteeing I won’t go to Hell

Oh, Plastic Jesus, Plastic Jesus,
Riding on the dashboard of my car.
Though the sun shines on his back,
Makes him peel, chip and crack,
A little patching keeps him up to par.

Riding down a thoroughfare,
With his nose up in the air,
A wreck may be ahead, but he don’t mind.
Trouble coming, he don’t see,
Just keeps his eyes on me,
And any other thing that lies behind.

I heard this song first in a scene from Cool Hand Luke when Luke (Paul Newman) sits plunking out the chords on a banjo while trying to deal with the news that his mother has died. It is a great song to sing while washing dishes, kind of like Janis Joplin‘s Mercedes Benz. Lately I have seen it more as representing the attitude of some people who are driving our country down a scary road. What? Why should we worry? We have our faith.
