A NaNoWriMo Excerpt: Karen Masterson’s Brain

This is basically unedited straight from my brain to the page, all part of writing a novel in November. Check out the link to NaNoWriMo on the Blogroll.

Karen Masterson’s Brain

The old Subaru station wagon cruised down Sir Francis Drake Boulevard through Fairfax. It was white but not shiny, a dirty sheen masked its purer nature. On the side of road stood a young woman dressed in a black Spanish dancer’s dress all lace and broad skirt. Her thumb was out. The look on her face was as vacant as the rundown store front behind her.

Before Random even thought about what he was doing he pulled up to the curb amid the loud honking from the car behind him. He looked up just in time to catch the driver’s gesture symbolizing his critique of Random’s driving skills. Random reached out and opened the passenger door. And the Spanish dancer flounced into the seat next to him and closed the door.

“Wow, smooth driving, Man, Steve said from the back where he and Lin sat snoozing next to one another. It was early in the afternoon and clouds had rolled in making the day a little somber.

“Where ya headed?” Random asked Spanish Dancer who was fiddling around in her purse for something. Her hand came up with a shiny pistol in it and she pointed it at Random’s face.

His stomach flipped over and his heart stopped for split second. The expression on his face however did not change.

“Give me some money,” she said sleepily.

“Sssure, but, I gotta stop the car,” Random stuttered and slowed the car down.

“Hey, Man’s, not like that. Just use your brain and a few words. He’s easy he’ll give you just about anything you want,” Steves calm low voice came from the backseat as his hand reached slowly for the gun.

“You won’t need this. Just use your head, Ok?” As he put his hand on the gun she let it go and turned to face out the window scrunching up her face in a parody of hard thinking.

“Please, give me money. Please, give me money,” she whispered urgently and just audibly.

Random looked back at Steve as if asking “What the F…”.

“It’s a toy, Man,” said Steve showing the pistol to Random from the side he could see it was shiny metallic plastic.

Random breathed. He realized he had been holding his breath he pulled into the parking lot of a supermarket stopped the car and turned off the engine all with a blank expression.

The girl still had her eyes closed in concentration whispering her desperate litany.

Random breathed and again this time with a little irritation, but yielding to concern.

“Hey you,” he said in calm firm voice, “Let’s start simple. What is your name?”

She opened one eye and then the other and then said almost as if she was discovering it herself, “Karen Masterson?” there was a little question mark at the end of this.

“Good,” Random said with a little dry chuckle at the end, “now where are you going?”

She put her hand up to her forehead and looked out the passenger window for 3 seconds, turned quickly and said, “I remember now, Mendicino to my grammy’s”

“Grammy lives in Mendicino? Do you have a phone number?”

“Yes,” she said gaining enthusiasm as if she was on a quiz show winning prizes. She nodded her head in quick little nods almost like a palsy.

“Can I see it?”

“Oh yeah.” She started to dig in the purse, but Random reached over and took it gently from her hands and checked inside. There was a small Chinese coin purse with pills in it, a pack of gum with one piece left, a little silver key ring with a kitty charm on it and three keys and a pink Velcro wallet with a state ID for Karen Masterson.

He showed her the pills.

“Is it time for you to take one of these maybe, Karen?”

She looked at the pill and said, “No, I took one when I left the house.”

“Where is the house? What town.”

“Auburn,” she answered quickly and smiled at her cleverness.

“Auburn is a long way from here,” Random said slowly, “I’m thinkin’ you need one now.” And then he turned to Steve. “Hand me the water bottle and Karen will take her pill. I’m going in to get something for us to eat and drink. I’m thinking maybe Karen might want to sleep a little in the back.”

Karen took the pill and relaxed a bit.

“Ya know I am sleepy. I don’t know when I slept last. Long time no food, sleep.” She said.

Random motioned with his head for Steve to come out of the car with him.

“I’m gonna call Grammy and then we are gonna take Karen to the police station.”

“No, Man, no way. We gotta help this poor kid.”

“Excuse me, pointed a gun at my head!”

“Toy gun.”

“Look Man, this is what you do.”

“What!?”

“People do crazy shit around you and all this wild stuff happens to you and you don’t freak out. I know you Man.”

“If that was me, Man we woulda been off the road or slamming into some other car or shit.”

“You grabbed the fucking gun!”

“I could see it was a toy and it wasn’t pointed at me at the time, if you recall,” Steve finished the argument. “And, look you got her whole story and got the pill in her. We’re half way home because you don’t freak out.”

“And you think taking her to the police is freaking out. I think their pretty good at taking care of lost girls.”

“Not as good as we could be, Man.”

Random looked uncertain.

“I’m goin’ in and calling Grammy get her in the backseat and lay her down. I think she’ll sleep for a while. Those are pretty heavy duty pills if they are what I think they are.”

“Right oh, Capitan!” Steve gave him a little salute.

“And check on Lin, my god what’s she thinkin’ about crazy Americans?”

Today’s NaNoWriMo Excerpt Rough and Off the Cuff

Emmylou Finegold moved with steady grace up the walk to the old farmhouse that used to be the main building of a school and before that a farmhouse of a retired police chief of San Jose. Her hair was long and indefinitely brown and grey. She carried two large buckets of steaming milk so smoothly not a drop overlapped the rims. The house looked like it belonged on the main street of an 1890’s town, the house of some well-to-do prosperous type who kept most of the gain to himself, but being out in the middle of golden hills and scrub and farmland, it looked somewhat generous. It was yellow, the color of a dark lemon with white trim with a wrap around porch and a dilapidated swing seat for two hanging on one corner in front. The front steps were broad and inviting leading to a large white door. Emmylou hummed a Buddy Holly song as she swayed gently to rhythm of the milk in the pails. The morning around her was blue and crisp. She set the milk down and turned to survey the land and sky. All was well and right at least in this place. She opened the broad white door, picked up the buckets and headed for he creamery at the back of the house. She had done the goats and there still were the cows to milk and eggs to gather. She saw the red message light flashing on the phone and thought, “Not today! I’ll check it later. Just probably a wrong number anyway.” She never talked to herself, but she began to sing in a sweet, whispery, soprano:

Every day seems a little brighter,

Every load seems a little lighter,

Every goat is a little bighter,

She lost the melody and trailed off into aimless humming then found it, a few more words coming to her:

Every day it’s a gettin’ closer

Goin’ faster than a rollercoaster

Love like yours will surely come my way a hay a hay

Her voice trailed into the echo of cement creamery. She felt a little nervous about the song. It was not a song she was very familiar with, but it seemed to want to come out of her now like a message she was singing to herself.

Every day it’s a gettin’ little longer

Every day love’s a little stronger

Do you ever long for

True love from me, a hee, a hee.

She shook her head and chuckled at the last hiccups. What a way to sing.

After she had dealt with the goat milk. She went out and milked the cows and gathered eggs. She sang some Eagles’ songs as she did these things, much more to her taste.

IV

Random, Steve, and Lin packed up their stuff and got in the car and took off for the Golden Gate. It was a fine crisp, blue morning with a few puffy clouds and the ever present fog bank out on the horizon. They rode across the orange bridge into Marin County and took the turn off up to Muir Woods and the old fort on the point. There was a lot of traffic going up toward the park. And they saw signs for a blue grass show in the afternoon.

“We’ll just walk around a little, and head out before the show.”

“Hey, Man, I like blue grass. Its happy howlin’ music. You could use a little a’ that right about now.” Steve bobbed his head to imaginary fiddle and banjo.

“What is blue grass?” Lin asked truly puzzled at the concept of blue grass.

“It’s old timey fiddle and pickin’ tunes from the Appalachian mountains back east. They named it for Kentucky, the blue grass state,” Steve answered still bobbing his head.

“I have never seen blue grass.”

“It’s not really blue. I don’t know why they call it that.”

Steve looked to Random to see if he knew. Random just shrugged his shoulders and gave a don’t look at me look.

They parked the car and walked up through the woods to the cliffs and the old canon emplacements facing out to sea.

Random sat with his back against a cement wall, leaned back, and let the sun and slight cool breeze cover his weariness. It was the finest feeling of deep restful sadness and joyous life. It was like love from the world that he soaked into the deepest parts of him.

Steve and Lin wandered off into the woods. Steve’s low, quiet, voice rumbling little points of interest, Lin responding matter-of-factly.

Random drifted off into doze, but he was still aware of rough calls of birds, the sun and breeze. And far away faintly the sound of a blue grass band practicing “Everyday” by Buddy Holly. He began to hum along, but the lyrics escaped him in his totally relaxed state. They played it slow and soulful with a mandolin and fiddle and a high lonesome singer howling to the blue sky dome, under it all the boom of the tide against the rocks at the bottom of the cliffs. Random had no idea how long he had sat in this state it could have been 10 minutes or 2 hours when Steve tapped the side of his foot with his shoe.

“Hey Man, let’s get goin’ that ol’ blue grass thing is gettin’ started soon and we are gonna have a helluva time gettin’ outa here then.”

Random hopped to his feet so fast that Steve backed up into Lin and had to hold on to her to keep her from going over.

“Alright, I’m ready. Let’s go to Point Reyes,” Random said quickly. He had come out of the daze with a hunger for some undefined wild adventure. He found his bearings and strode off toward the car without taking notice if the other two were following. He was humming Everyday, but the lyrics were still not coming to him like they were buried under the muddy surface of the music.

My computer was down so I did a little cutting and gluing. Then when my computer came back I made it a little more interesting. I call this one Visions of the Fourfold Path.

The Weather Inside

The end of my week has settled into a featureless gray gloom both inside and out. The computer I usually tap away at is out of commission and I am left to hammer away at unfamiliar keys. Not a big deal. At work everyone is in deadline mode and nobody seems to give a crap about actually doing things, they just want documentation that it was done. Its the old quandary if you spend half of your time documenting what you do, you only get half of what you should be doing done or else your fudging. We have to do a lot of fudging. I hate fudging. I hate doing things to the letter and not the spirit of the guidelines.

I was also looking forward to a three day weekend of writing, but that looks to be filled with teenagers, errands, and the general wackiness of people who are too damn busy. My mood, as you can probably tell, sucks, which doesn’t help my writing either.

I have been listening to a tape of “On The Road” by Kerouac, and the reader is good at capturing Kerouac’s special lunatic wild heart. That has kept me somewhat sane. A little spontaneous weird wild moody poetry is good for my soul in this gloom. I am sure to find some brightness soon. The clouds will part and golden sun will make glorious summer of my winter of discontent. After all it is still fall. I must gird myself for the ice and snow to come.
