The Journey of 50,000 Words Begins With 1000.

I have made a page out of the first 1000 words of my novel. Written yesterday tonight I will do at least 1000 more. I really have no idea what I am doing or where this is going. It wasn’t hard to write this much, but I have to write at least an average of about 1700 words a day to complete the challenge so the quality might suffer but this is mostly a rough draft. Comments are welcome. I really will appreciate any feedback as long as it is constructive. It is part of the process of discovery. Just let me know what you think if you have nothing better to do and have the patience to read such rough work.

Where the Were-sheep Walk

This is the movie we were watching last night. If you can stand over-the-top gore, it is about as funny as Shaun of the Dead. The concept of packs of vicious carnivorous sheep and everything done in very corny dialogue delivered with perfect seriousness combines to give scene after scene of hilarious lurking evil sheep and mad science out of control. I wont tell you how it ends but suffice to say it has something to do with incestuous bestiality, really weird farm husbandry and flatulence . There is something to offend just about everyone here, but everyone in the room was laughing and groaning throughout. And, like I said if you are gore-shy it is definitely not the movie for you. In one scene a man throws his severed leg at an attacking sheep and blood and innards and more blood everywhere. I haven’t laughed like this in a long time. Maybe it was all the teenage high spirits in the room, but I think it was the movie.

The Universe is Forming in My Head

My story has begun to coalesce into a muddy blur as I prepare to start my novel. There is a vague plan which I am sure will go through many changes. It will be more like trekking through the wilderness on foot with a map drawn on a piece of toilet paper with a pencil. I am thinking that this will be more of a voyage of self-discovery than a treasure hunt.

I have a house full of raucous teenage energy as my almost grown children and their friends are halloweening at our house. This is not helping the clarifying process, but it is really amusing to walk in and out of the room as they jostle and jibe and generally enjoy each others company. It is like a room full of puppies who can talk and laugh, and do, a lot and loudly. They are comfortable just hanging out without a plan, and can enjoy themselves anywhere as long as they are together. I remember that, when all I really had to worry about was me. I also remember being miserable half the time because all I had to worry about was me. I am on the whole happier or more content with my life now, but I miss just being able to take off for wherever , usually San Fransisco or Backpacking or just out all night with friends doing whatever. It really did not matter. The people mattered not what we were doing. Well I have a house full of that now, and it is not so bad even though it is not so good for the preparation. But what the heck, after raising 3 children to teenage and beyond, I am pretty much ready for anything.

Dance to Your Own Drum’s Beat

Today I was on the elliptical trainer moving to the magical tones of Tool, thinking that the drummer was awe inspiring in a dangerous way, moving the music forward with extreme force and a little malice. This kind of driving beat helps me to keep moving. I was also thinking about the huge project I will be undertaking in just 3 days (if you are just tuning in I will be writing a 50,000 word novel in the month of November as part of national novel writing month); it crosses my mind every now and then. Also, all day I’ve been rolling the concepts of success and failure around in my head and coming to a good attitude about such a monumental task.
All these thoughts kind of collided in my brain and I started thinking what if this really great drummer for some reason when he listened to his work considered it a failure. It could happen. I see people do it all the time. If you see your life or actions as either successes or failures you can easily slip into over-critiquing and lose the joy of what you are doing. Or what happens with many people, they will not try something if they don’t think they will be perceived as successful and miss out on all kinds of learning experiences and connections they could make with other people and their world. Our culture is so hypnotized by mass market culture. We are always exposed to the best and brightest, most talented and gifted people who often make us feel inadequate.
But it is about the experience not the reaction! You could be the greatest drummer in the world and still be miserable because you don’t love drumming; you are chasing perfection, and therefore feel like you are failing. But if you love drumming and you are doing it for a living, there is no way to feel like a failure.
So it all seems to come down to: If you focus on the process you
may not succeed in other peoples eyes but you will learn something and you certainly can’t fail.
If you strive for perfection you might be the best, but you may never be satisfied with your success.

Two Dancers and Two Dream Songs

Two Dancers

Dance The World!

A Song Without a Beat

I move in dreams

frantically arranging pictures

in their places,

painting faces,

timing the spaces,

missing the beat of my own heart’s thump.

Song from a dream

I’d rather be dancer down the street,

with broken glass and garbage cans

beneath my feet.

I’d rather be a painter or a devil.
