A Place Outside Experience

It all had to do with

the center of a cat’s smile

and empty parking spaces

on top of a tall building.

Some Thoughts On Early Childhood Education

I wrote these thoughts for a class I am taking as professional development.

According to the NAEYC position on Developmentally Appropriate Practice, the field of Early Childhood Education in America faces three important challenges. There are increasing shortages in quality infant and toddler programs, more students from immigrant families who are learning English are present classrooms, and an increasing number of special needs children being included in typical classroom situations.

There is one challenge the NAEYC position does not address and that is adequate compensation for all of this expertise the field is demanding. This is the most likely source of most of the challenges facing early childhood programs. Teachers are expected to get more and more education, often taking on debt to do so, and are paid less than almost any other profession. The fact is our country as whole does not value early childhood education enough to have a constantly up to date workforce in this field. ECE teachers often make just over minimum wage, unless they are able to work for the few government sponsored programs in which even experienced teachers work part year and part day and in almost all cases make at the top of salary scale what other professions make as starting wages. This situation leads to burn out and turn over in staff no matter how much administrators of these programs work on maintaining positive working models.

This issue also affects the number of minorities who remain in the profession. When I was working in Seattle most of the teachers were white while the assistants tended to be Asian and African immigrants who were attending college programs in other fields and had no plans to remain in ECE. Every program I have worked for, with the exception of a program for migrant agricultural workers, has had mostly white female teachers with husbands who had professional jobs that earned more than theirs.

I think this is the most important issue affecting the quality of ECE programs in our country, especially when the importance of the role of teacher, stated so clearly in by the NAEYC in their position on appropriate practice, is crucial to the quality of these programs.

Thawing Out My Mental Wings

The Starry Night

Image via Wikipedia

I shall free my mind from the shackles of ice and snow and holidays and let it fly me into far flung fantastic visions. I am done with all the worry and oppression. Out among the stars that shine in the universal night of possibilities. Things will be what they are. I have little control over what happens around me, but my visions are the only piece of reality that are completely unique to me. If I can put this into words or pictures or music, create a form for them and let others gaze into my world, then maybe they will see a way to form their visions and share them. Maybe our visions are not as unacceptable or pathetic as we think, just human and flawed. Many have gone before showing life and questing for an honest depiction of their inner life or the life that they immersed themselves in. Kerouac and Kafka, Kahlo and Van Gogh. There are too many to name.  Like them I must portray my reality honestly as a whole with all the messy pieces included. My visions are unique to me, but also a part of human experience. I will not remain another masked face in the crowd. I will bring  forth the carvings on the stone that is the heart of me and show a piece of what it is to be human at this point in time in this place with these people surrounding me. This is all I can do, and I think it is enough and probably a more than possible task, but what else is there?

Palomar and Another Snowy Bus Ride

Cover of "Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup St...

Palomar

I just finished Gilbert Hernandez “Palomar” a complete collection of his comic written and drawn in 80’s and 90’s. Wow! What a different universe he lives in. Most writer/artists who create serious comics seem to approach life from a perspective outside the mainstream. This is no Calvin and Hobbes or Doonesbury, which are great strips but are cleaned up for mass consumption. They appeal to a wider audience. Gilbert Hernandez is obviously not worried about offending people, which leaves his work wide open and fascinating. This book is not for the sheltered or prudish. He shows a world full of sex and violence, but along with that he shows of people struggling to maintain relationships and stay connected with each other. How do you hold a community together when in the end every person in that community is an individual. People come and go,  help and use and hurt and abuse each other. How do you stay tied to a community with all the pain connected to it. Ugly stuff happens in life and Gilbert Hernandez shows the ugly and how it sometimes leads to beauty. He shows the value as well as the problems with interdependence and the bonds of family centered culture. He looks on it all with a neutral eye that accepts all things as worthy of observation and depiction. Some of it shocks, but mostly taken as a whole it is a good example of art that gives insight into our own lives, and expands the world of the reader. But, like I said before you will have to get past the shock. He does not put his ideas in a candy coated shell for just anyone to consume. He is looking for those who will dig in the dirt to find the rare and beautiful.

Another Snowy Bus Ride

I am writing with big black yarn covered fingers.

I am remodeling the house that contains my life, which is now called white ice world. I am constructing  bus route hallways as my usual car and road hallways are useless.White Ice World includes many more people I will never know, or even see again, but it is warm in the bus part of hallway that with short walks slippery trudges through the gaps leads to rooms that I need to get to.

I am realizing that when White Ice World fades. I will want to use these hallways as well as the old ones that will clear in time. The gaps in the hallway will become pleasant pieces of the structure of my life house. Maybe in the spring I will start work on my bicycle hallway. Who knows my life house could grow to fill all the spaces between here and the places I travel to each day. For now this rattly, bouncing passage filled with strangers will do, and even provide interesting building material for the life house I am constantly constructing and remodeling in my mind.
