Attention + Focus + Time = Enchanted Awareness II

A Close Examination of the Living Forrest Floor

I took my time, looking down as I walked, looking for the salamander I had seen on my last walk here. No newt appeared, but as I continued to stop and examine the detritus along the side of the trail, so many shapes and shadows caught my eye. Whole realms of possible images in each square foot of forest floor. Even after my camera battery gave out, I continued to walk looking down desiring to take it all in.

Attention + Focus + Time = Enchanted Awareness

“Tree”

It is foolish
to let a young redwood
grow next to a house.

Even in this
one lifetime,
you will have to choose.

That great calm being,
this clutter of soup pots and books–

Already the first branch-tips brush at the window.
Softly, calmly, immensity taps at your life.”
― Jane Hirshfield

The Little Owl, Albrecht Dürer

“We do not obtain the most precious gifts by going in search of them,” she insisted, “but by waiting for them.”³

Simone Wiel from “Reflections on the Right Use of School Studies with a View to the Love of God.”
