There’s no day like a snow day

The Wire

A catchy title for a pretty boring-ass day. There is more ice than snow now as the rain is starting to freeze a little. The sounds of horror drift down from upstairs as my children entertain themselves with scary movies.

Dreaming of the Hood

Last night I had dreams about a show we are watching, “The Wire” on HBO, which is quite possibly the best show ever on TV. It is about Baltimore police, city government, drug dealing, dock workers, schools, parenting, redemption, and living by a code, or not. It is so well written and acted that although the themes are as vast as humanity, none of the characters are lost in the immensity of it all. The writing is at times clever and playful (I find myself laughing at horrific things), but never flippant, and they are not afraid to shock you by getting rid of characters you are supposed to care about, or seem to have potential. It is about the hard stuff of inner city life and pulls no punches, and yet leaves me wanting to watch more. The police and government officials are flawed and human and some are worse than the criminals. Some of the criminals are honorable and truly sympathetic characters, though real enough that you wouldn’t want to hang out with them. Even the noble and upright characters have their demons and shadows. It is as truly told as can be born by the audience. Being about life on the street and on HBO, there is a lot of expletive and non-standard language, but to me that just keeps it real. There is one scene in which two homicide detectives are carefully investigating a crime scene and the only word they use for 2 minutes is F**** with different inflections and body language.

I suggest you watch it from the beginning as characters develop and plot is important. You have to get a feel for the world and who’s in it. They are on their 5 th and last season now. We are watching the 4th and the quality has been amazing throughout.

My dreams are full of Baltimore inner city life and death, and I don’t really mind, though I am so glad not to be living there.

Some Kandinsky to Brighten My Winter Blues

Anonymous. Wassily Kandinsky. c 1913. From Was...

Wassily Kandinsky is one of my favorite artist. He did experiments in line, color and shape like a scientist. His paintings have an innocent and energetic quality of intellectual curiosity and passion for surprise that I am lacking these days so here they are, two bright suns for my winter of discontent. I often use his works to show children some new ways to use line and color. I explain to them that the man who painted this was an artist, and we can be artists too by trying new things with our materials.kandinsky-composition1.jpgkandinsky-museumlithograph.jpg

Winter Night Walk

I walk back from the corner store my foggy breaths

leading me up the hill.

I see Orion in the southern sky

so clear against the indigo

with the crescent silver shining

just over his outstretched arm.

The sky dome clear horizon to horizon,

and my face numb,

but shining moonlight

back up as I take it all in.

The streams of water on the driveway

are frozen into  slick low speed bumps

shattering the moonlight

on their hard surface.

I place one foot on an ice stream

feel it start to slide so easily down,

no friction.

I have chocolate in my pocket

sodas for my children in my gloved hands.

I stand just a little longer,

My face growing numb.

I walk down the driveway

watch for the icy patches

up the steps.

As I open the door the warm inside

leaps on me

pulls me in saying,

“Here you are again!

in your island of warmth

in the midst

of a tranquil sea of winter.”

A Long Not So Bad Week

Although I am still encrusted in the gloom of winter, things don’t look as bad after another long week. My attitude is definitely improving even though the weather is not.

I had a dream about planning a parade with a vision of a beautiful straight main street lined with tremendous stately maple trees golden and casting dappled shadows on an autumn afternoon. It was warm and safe and empty of people.

“This is the street for the parade!” I said to my friend who wasn’t sure if it was long enough.

That is where I am at now. I have a beautiful place in my mind but I am not sure if I can get my whole parade on it. Maybe I just need to make my parade smaller, only a couple of marching bands and not too many floats, but I have to have shriners on minibikes. It just would not be right without that.

This probably makes no sense to anyone but me, but that is fine because January is not making much sense in real life, I might as well have a parade in my dreams.

Trudging Through January.

I have to say I have had better weeks. The winter is beginning to sink into my bones with damp and chill weighing heavily on me. All the sky does right now is seep and leak cold water and wet white slush. We glimpse the sun every now and then as it races behind the clouds toward the western horizon which it reaches about 4:30 nowadays. I must admit I was depressed and grumpy this week. The kids in my class, who are mostly three, are acting like three year olds and what’s worse they keep showing up to class, all 19 of them. It is driving me crazy. I ask their parents don’t they ever get sick, but the parents just look at me with pity and shake their heads sadly. I usually expect these things, but January’s long dark tunnel makes me drowsy and forgetful. I look around my classroom and think where did all these three year olds come from then my assistant reminds me that I am a teacher and we are in the middle of the Hokey Pokey. “I knew that.” I say nonchalantly as we put our right hands in. Last year we were snowed in for two weeks in January, so I guess it could be worse. But then I don’t have 19 three year olds at my house.

And then there’s so many other things to cheer me, like going to pick up my daughter at work on Thursday only to wait 20 minutes and find out she was waiting for me inside with an injured knee. I had to take her to the urgent care unit and wait another hour and a half to find out what we already knew that it was a dislocated knee cap (this has happened before). I was faked out again by the trick where they bring the patient back to the examining room. I thought good it is almost over. But, nooooo! Doctor’s must have a rule that a patient must sit on the little exam bed for at least 20 minutes. It’s a thing they do to break the spirit, and make the patient(why do you think they call them patients) pliant, putty in their seemingly benevelent hands. I sat out in the waiting room, when I wasn’t pacing, or napping on the floor.

Today is Saturday and mercifully free of munchkins. They are off with their parents asking them when they get to go to school again. I think that it is a conspiracy. They act like they want to come to school so they can eat play dough, sneeze on the food and scream in loud high pitched voices every time someone comes near that special red car or tries to eat some of their play dough. The parents are in on it too. They are looking forward to class day making sure that their little noodle heads are healthy and excited to be somewhere other than at home where they behave pretty much the same way.

Like I said today is Saturday, and I sit in the quiet of my slightly chilled and drafty but quiet home. I prepare myself for the onslaught with the mental disciplines of video games and short naps in between snacks. If I keep to this strict regimen I will be ready for any of their diverse, devious and seemingly random acts of looneyness. Next week I will be prepared.
