A big blue bend in an endless sky,
A yellow fire clinging deep in a dry well,
It is all the same.
A cloud of stars,
Grains of rice in a black bowl,
Simple.

We had a peaceful and stress free Christmas this year. Around our house this is a major breakthrough. Usually Mary is melting down with stress, but since she quit her job at the church, she has a new perspective on the whole process, and came up with a plan. She is going to write it up and it is a bit complex, but suffice to say for the first time in many a year, we got through Christmas without door slamming or tears. In fact it was a very sleepy affair.
The first part of our plan was to eliminate shopping as a priority, blasphemous as that sounds in our Christmas driven economy. We bought one thing that the whole family would enjoy (a Nintendo Wii) and gave some simple home made gifts. And, Mary carried out her plan to spread the idea of Christmas out over the rest of the year. It really is a great idea, but I have to let her write it as it is her idea.
We played multiplayer video games and hung out as a family all day. No one went anywhere or did anything exciting. There was even a little snow. Very nice indeed. And, we feasted on the home grown ham from my sister’s farm. Simply a pleasant day with people I love. What could be better? I really don’t know.
I hope everyone’s Christmas was peaceful and full of love, and if it wasn’t I wish you a speedy recovery. And, if you don’t celebrate Christmas I hope that it did not make life difficult for you. Bless us all and give us love and understanding to deal with whatever comes next.
I have launched my latest self experiment. It is a blog written by a fictional character, a family and personal history. My character will only be interacting with people on the blog itself. So if anyone leaves a comment my character will respond, but the character will not be sending emails or commenting on other peoples blogs. The experiment will be how real I can make this character. It could get to be an interactive story, or it may just be me writing a story in blog form. I don’t have a plot line laid out, but I do have some ideas for entries. I am sure I will be using some material from my own life though probably more from the distant past than the present or recent past. I am starting out with a character at least a little like myself, but sufficiently different to provide a challenge for me. My character will not be dispensing advice or forming relationships, just writing about himself. I will not be including any real people except perhaps people already famous who happen to come up. I will try to invent my character as I go. I wonder who my person will turn out to be.
Challenge: See if you can find my character’s blog. You can guess as a comment here. I could just tell you but it’s funner this way. If you guess correctly you of course get self satisfaction and a comment on your blog, but nada mas.
I have aborted self-experiment #5, but I learned enough by going as far as I did. Writing or even publishing poems at that rate is very taxing when you are doing anything else.
Work last week was insane. Everyone at the main office wanted all of our paperwork up to date so that they could look at it over the break, which is a ridiculous request in a short month full of home visiting and families in crisis. We are never completely up to date, ever, unless we are not doing anything to keep up to date. Like my friend Asha says, “Paperwork is like chasing your tail. You just never catch up to it.”
Well anyway I am done with that for 2 weeks and am enjoying my family. I hope everyone else is doing all right as well, and enjoying some peace and good will in whatever form that takes for you.
